BOF: Does anyone know how to apply for a last-minute BOF?
If there is some free presentation slot, I would like to
hold an informal BOF to discuss these ideas.
I posted about this on twitter already, but I hacked together a quick user theme for the excellent whoisi service.
It works with either stylish or greasemonkey (there are two versions on the theme’s page, one for each excellent Firefox extension).
I was intending on going to this year’s GUADEC in Istanbul, Turkey… but, unfortunately, I’ve been having an amazingly horrid apartment experience.
A lot of Linux/openSUSE users aren’t aware that there are more to file system permissions than the obvious Owner, Group, Other / Read, Write, Execute setup.
All major Linux file systems (ext3, reiserfs, etc) support access control lists (ACL) and its very easy to use them.
To see if a file or directory has an ACL set on it, you can use ls:
inspidell:~ # ls -ld /home/sontek
You’ll get output similar to this:
drwxr-xr-x+ 55 sontek users 4096 Jul

Does anyone have suggestions on what to use for centralized storage at home? I have a lot of music/photos here piling up and would like to put them on some energy-efficient NAS box. Ideally it would have some sort of of built-in backup solution as well. A lot of the NAS-in-a-box solutions seem to have RAID 1, but that really only helps for HA. I am more concerned with never ever losing this stuff than having it available 24/7.
Packages of the latest Deluge (a torrent client), 0.5.9.3, are finally available for openSUSE, in the Packman repository.
It took so long to upgrade because the Deluge developers upgraded the in-tree rblibtorrent to a more recent build that, in turn, requires the very latest Boost 1.35. Took me some hours of work to make a boost1_35 package that can be installed aside the (older) boost package that ships with openSUSE.
BTW, if Deluge doesn’t start properly, run “deluge” from a shell and if you see the following error message: “deluge.core.DelugeError: 'No such unique_ID.'” then you have to delete your Deluge configuration (rm -rf ~/.config/deluge) and start+configure Deluge again.
Since both Coolo and Michl are on vacation for two weeks, I’m a bit more involved with the openSUSE distribution.
An interesting feature of Active Directory is Roaming Profiles. You can login on different workstations and you have all you data with you. If you use a Notebook you have the same and the ability to work offline. As soon as you’re connected to you network again the data will be automatically synchronized again and you have a backup of your data.
Now the time has come to introduce Roaming Home Directories for Linux. Yesterday I’ve released a new version of csync and the first version of pam_csync. With both components you’re able to use an Active Directory environment to share your data between workstation and notebooks and work offline.
Currently only the SMB protocol is supported but I will write more plugins for other protocols in future. I have sftp and rsync (if doable) in mind. So you will be able to use it at home with you’re small NAS or in a Linux only company environment.
This is not the only use case. If you have a USB disk with your music collection. You can can attach it to PC1 and synchronize it with your local collection. Go to the next computer and synchronize it there again. As csync is a bidirectional file synchronizer the collection on PC1 and PC2 will be the same.
